John Reed Hodge (1893-1963) was born in Golconda, Illinois. He attended Southern Illinois Teachers College and the University of Illinois. He was commissioned a Second Lieutenant out of OCS into the Infantry Reserve in 1917. He saw service in World War I in France and Luxembourg during 1918 and 1919. He was promoted to Captain in July of 1920. From 1921 to 1925, he was a Military Science professor on the faculty of the Mississippi Agricultural and Mechanical College.
